It seems like I just posted Eid cookie recipes. Here is my Eid-ul-Adha cookie recipe I'd like to share with you. The Roll n' Jam Fill Cookie!! It's a cookie we can be creative with, which is what I love about it. And of course it tastes good. It is also very easy to make. (edited 03/01/07: they don't taste good.. they taste beyond excellent!!)
I divided the dough in half. To one half, I added vanilla essence, rolled each ball in sesame seeds and filled the center with strawberry jam. The second half, I added maple extract, rolled each ball in brown sugar, and filled the center with apple-cinnamon jam.
I would love to hear from others who try it out. Please let us know what you rolled the cookie in and what jam, etc. you used as filling.
Be creative!

Ahh.. to be back posting.. blogger has been soooo annoying since I switched to 'beta'..urgh
Anyway.. here it is my dear sisters.. numero uno pain in the bootay sewing project. In August I had bought two fabric pieces and this is what I had in mind when purchasing them. A hijab organizer!! We can't deny we all need one.. how many of us have half our scarves in boxes?, shoved in any drawer space available?, under the bed? we just wear the black one because who really cares to find one that matches?
It turned out great as far as its usefulness. But as much as I hate to discourage a project.. this one was not fun! Mainly because the vinyl has to be sewn with paper over, otherwise it sticks to the machine foot and therefore won't move. (note: I have a problem with things not turning out 'perfect' *uhmm some might call it being a 'perfectionist'* ... so maybe it won't be so bad for someone else)
It's in two sections. The top to hold scarves, the bottom to hold niqaabs, gloves and even has a hijab pin cushion thingy. The lower section also detaches to fold into a 'travel' size scarf holder.. cool eh? *now to travel*
Oh I can finally start my cupcake art now!!! this should be a blast..insha'Allah.
I can't believe Muslim Wife tagged me!!!.. I actually had to use a few brain cells for this one. Here goes, insha'Allah you don't think I'm very weird.. just a little is fine.
Seven Things I want to do in life: 1. memorize more of the Qur'an 2. help the homeless, and orphans 3. die with the shahada on my lips 4. sew myself an entire outfit 5. snowboard 6. paint a mural 7. plant a vegetable garden
Seven Things I can do: 1. paint an entire house 2. benchpress more than my body weight 3. think before I speak 4. fish 5. draw with a mouse 6. swim 7. cook an authentic dish from more than 20 countries
Seven Things I can’t do: 1. eat a popsicle (sensitive teeth) 2. shout (don't laugh.. it's embarassing when people notice) 3. live without lipbalm 4. eat with niqaab on (some sisters are amazing at this!) 5. write an essay - or anything else that involves writing 6. pretend to care about politics 7. ice skate
Seven things I say the most: 1. oh my God 2. wonderful 3. toodaloo 4. ewww 5. lovely 6. trust me 7. that's nice and that is the extent of my vocabulary (#5 on what I can't do)
I'm not going to tag anyone, but anyone who reads this, is welcome to try it... and let me know.. so I can check it out, insha'Allah. (and see how many other weird ones are out there)
In the little town of Whitby (Ontario, Canada), there is a Muslim Welfare Centre for women and children. A charming building, with a somewhat spiritless interior. So to add a little life to the walls some absolutely wonderful sisters (and a brother) have put a lot of time, effort and commitment to make a difference.
This project started in the summer (2006), it involved mailing out canvas squares to any sisters (or brothers) who were interested in participating, sealing each canvas once received, sewing the edges, and then putting them together. Anyone who is thinking of doing something like this, I highly encourage you to give it a shot, as both Unity and Kindness are essential parts of Islam, and insha'Allah everyone involved can reap the rewards.
Few things to keep in mind: First consult the organization (etc.) before you decide to start a project like this, the cost to mail out the canvas can add up, depending on how much canvas you need it can get pricey, not everyone you mail canvas too... return it! (and unfortunately don't have the courtesy to inform you they can't get it done), and stick to your due date! (mistake I made, by hoping a few last minute works of art might trickle in... umph)
Jazak'Allah to everyone who was part of this project and for your patience. Each canvas square is gorgeous!! Masha'Allah. And has it's own unique style, which makes them that much more beautiful. May Allah reward you for your good intentions and your generosity. Ameen.
Insha'Allah I hope one day we can put another mural together, maybe for a school, or an organization, or even an individual. Any sisters (or brothers) who might be interested in something like this.. please shoot me an email. (amtullah79@yahoo.ca)
Anyone who likes Reese's Pieces will love the Kiss Cookie! It's also very attractive... which makes it great for parties. Note, the dough needs time to chill, so make ahead.
Consider yourself warned; guys seem to be attached to this cookie.. so you may need to find new hiding places.
I'd love to hear from anyone who decides to try it.
Makes 50-60
1/2 cup (4oz/8 tblsp) butter 1/2 cup (4oz/8 tblsp) peanut butter 1/2 cup (4oz/8 tblsp/114g) white sugar 1/2 cup (4oz/8 tblsp/114g) brown sugar 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/4 (10oz/284g) cups flour Hershey's Kisses (or chocolate chips... but it won't taste the same) Sugar - for rolling cookies in
:: Cream butter, sugars, and peanut butter. :: Beat in eggs. :: Sift baking soda, salt and flour and gradually add to creamed mixture. :: Chill for 1 hour or overnight. :: Shape dough into 1-inch balls. :: Roll in sugar. :: Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Do not flatten. :: Bake at 375°F (190°C) degrees for 7-9 minutes. :: Remove from oven. Immediately press one unwrapped Hershey's Kiss (or three chocolate chips) in the center of each cookie. :: Gently lift from cookie sheet with a spatula and let cool on a wire rack. :: Say bimillah, and enjoy!
(edited: 03/01/07 Suggestion: I used white/brown swirly chocolate kisses and didn't roll them in sugar, in the batch I made for Eid-ul-Adha, here is how they look. They still taste wonderful but not like Reese's anymore. )
