Book or Card?

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

After finally taking a little time to actually sort through all my recipes and getting most of them into a binder, I've decided to re-sort and write them out on recipe cards, because they seem like they'll last longer, and recipe cards look pretty! But now I'm not sure, because I have a lot or recipes... *that's going to be one huge box!* and some recipes are really long.

How do the rest of you sisters organize your recipes? Please let me know.. and any pro's and con's you find.. because I don't ever want to do this again :)

As-salaamu 'alaikum,

Well, my mum just has huuuuuge binders and books... for long recipes, try typing them out on the computer and printing them, which is what my mum does sometimes...

Assalamu Alaikum,

You sister that is a good question, I just usually print mine off the internet and then loose them after I make the dish, or the kids destroy them. I think a book might be your best bet and you can probably make that pretty too.

Right now I have my recipes saved on my computer and once in awhile I back them up on a CD. Something that I tried in the past was putting the recipes on recipe cards and them putting them in a photo album. The kind with clear pockets to slide the pictures in. That way I could just wipe off the page if something spilled and the recipe stayed clean. I may even start printing out my recipes on cards and use an album again.

I usually type it up on the computer too if I get a recipe from someone or a library book, then I copy and print it out and laminate it, I keep a file, hole punch it, and that way it keeps all together, and when I do make something I do get flour over my recipe’s lol so I can wipe it off if it gets dirty, it’s not a bad idea, I like it this way hehe.

Jazak'Allah Islam Poems, I shall add you to my blog links and check it out :)

My dear sisters Surviving and Asma thank you very much for all the feed back... you both brought up excellent points about spills! Although I now have a habit of putting the recipe on the fidge *you can never have tooo many magnets :)* and not touching it until I'm done!

I like the photo album idea too :)

Jazak'Allah everyone.

As-salam alaykum,

I am not sure if this is too late to comment but I usually organize them according to type of recipes. Like Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Baked, etc. I just find it easier when I want to make something for let's say as a snack.

Salaams...Wow, finally found other sisters that think about organizing their recipes like me!

I type up all of my faves (or copy and paste) and print them up. Then I put them in a 3 ring binder inside those plastic sheets that protect paper, that way I can wipe them clean. I also like the plastic protectors because you can take out recipe and add notes (which I can later add to the recipe I have saved on the computer)...

My hope is to one day make pretty books for my girls when they get married....so that they can have all the recipes of dishes they grew up with! But that's still a dream...for now it's 3 ring binders for me...oh yes...like another sister said dividing them into categories like breakfast, snacks, etc...really helps!

Love your blog!

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu my dearest sister,

Jazak'Allah for dropping by and leaving such wonderful advice!, much appreciated.

Insha'Allah I pray you are able to one day many a pretty recipe book for you children! That's such a wonderful idea. How old are your girls?? My mom did that for us one Eid. She took smaller binders (it's about half the size of a regular binder) and made a cover for it. She bought fabric with with fruits/veggies on, and cut them out then sewed them onto a sold fabric as a cover for the binder, and wrote different titles on. (example, Do I have Cook? CookBook [in the front] Love Mom [at the back].

Well anyway..the binder is now to small for my recipes..hehe Since this post I decided to get a large (3-4inch) binder and organize everything.. well let me tell you, it is so big and full..that it's so difficult to turn the pages!! *just my luck..hehe*

So as of last week, I bought 8 'journal' type books..and I'm going to write them in there. Insha'Allah it works out. I do get a lot of recipes online, but don't print them..because I shorten then recipes a lot..so it's like half the length, and I understand it better.

Insha'Allah I hope I get to see you often.

As-salaamu'alaykum
Love Farhana
